Venus Rising is affair of the art
The final of five public artworks to enhance Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point Park has been unveiled.
Minister for Government Services, Simon Finn said the sculpture Venus Rising: Out of the Water and into the Light would further Brisbane’s reputation as a magnet for international artworks.
Mr Finn said Venus Rising, by British artist Wolfgang Buttress, would become a beacon on Brisbane’s skyline.
“At 23 metres in height, this large scale contemporary artwork will be illuminated from the base and impossible to miss,” Mr Finn said.

He said Venus Rising was a stainless steel sculpture made up of hundreds of rings and polished tubes that twist gently at the waist to create a hollow spiral.
“Observers will be able to experience the sculpture by entering it at ground level – once inside, you will be able to look up to the sky through an ‘oculus’ at the top,” Mr Finn said.
He said Queenslanders selected Venus Rising via a Statewide poll.
He said Venus Rising edged out Irish artist Alex Pentek’s The Kangaroo as the people’s choice for the park, after the two artists were shortlisted from 66 submissions by local, national and international entrants.
“More than 3,400 Queenslanders voted for the finalists in a public poll to determine the winning design,” Mr Finn said.
