New PS training for
Parliament probes

The Queensland Parliamentary Service is to offer new training opportunities for PS staff interacting with Parliamentary Committees.
Last year Parliament agreed to introduce a portfolio-based committee system, the biggest change to parliamentary procedures since the abolition of the Legislative Council, with significant implications for the public sector.
The new Committees have increased powers to scrutinise and examine Bills and have the power to invite Public Servants to assist them in their examination of legislation.
Committees ready to question staff
The Queensland Parliamentary Service has launched a series of training sessions to inform PS Staff on the operation of the new Parliamentary Committee inquiry process; clarify the roles and responsibilities of Public Service officers in respect of providing information to a Parliamentary Committee; and enable the Public Servants to gain practical information about preparing submissions and appearing before a Committee.
The training sessions are due to commence in March.
Keynote speakers who will include the Clerk of the Parliament and the Manager of the Committee Office will provide current information on the reform and modernisation of the State’s parliamentary committee system.
According to the Queensland Parliamentary Service, the new Committee system is aimed at enhancing Parliament’s scrutiny of proposed legislation and also government expenditure and PS staff are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new processes in order to understand their responsibilities under the new system.
More information about the system or the training can be accessed at this PS News link.
